GIVE
Gentle · Interested · Validate · Easy manner
GIVE (be Gentle, act Interested, Validate, use an Easy manner) is how to keep a relationship strong while you ask for something, say no, or work through a conflict.
The steps
- Gentle — no attacks, threats, judgments. Tone calm, language clean.
- Interested — listen. Eye contact (if culturally fit). No phone, no interrupting.
- Validate — show their feelings make sense, even if you disagree with the conclusion.
- Easy manner — light, where you can. Smile if it fits. The relationship is bigger than this fight.
When it helps
When the relationship matters more than winning this one.
Examples
- Gentle. A friend is hurt that you missed their birthday dinner. You don't defend yourself or roll your eyes, and you keep your tone soft.
- Interested. You put your phone away and let them finish without interrupting. You ask what the evening was like.
- Validate. "That makes sense. You planned it for weeks and I wasn't there." You show you understand before you explain anything.
- Easy manner. You keep it light where you can and offer to take them to dinner next week. The conversation ends warmer than it started.
Where people get stuck
- Being gentle in words but not in tone. Sarcasm and sighs undo it.
- Pretending to listen while planning your reply. Interest has to be real.
- Giving up what you need to keep the peace. GIVE is how you ask, not a reason to stop asking.
When not to use it
When the relationship is unsafe, keeping it isn't the goal. Your safety comes first.
