When Parents Reach Out

You don't need a diagnosis — or certainty — to reach out. If daily life feels harder than it should, a consultation is a good first step.

Emotions that go from zero to a hundred — and stay there
Shutting down, withdrawing, or spending all their time alone
Self-harm, or talk that worries you
School refusal, slipping grades, or constant battles over school
Explosive conflict at home — every conversation becomes a fight
Anxiety or sadness that isn't lifting on its own
Risky choices, impulsivity, or friends you're worried about

How We Work With Teens

Teen therapy at FRTC is structured and practical — concrete skills for real situations, not just open-ended talk.

Individual Therapy

Weekly one-on-one sessions with a clinician trained to build trust with a guarded teenager. Skills-based work on emotions, relationships, school stress, and whatever your teen is actually navigating.

Skills Groups

Teens learn alongside peers in a structured, classroom-like format that feels less like "therapy" — and parents learn the same skills, so change holds at home.

Family Support

A dedicated Parent Coordinator, optional parent coaching, and clear guidance on how to support the work between sessions — you're part of the plan, not a bystander.

In Person or Telehealth

Greenwood Village office (Denver Tech Center) or secure video sessions anywhere in Colorado — built around school and activity schedules.

A Certified DBT Program Behind Every Teen We See

FRTC is a DBT-Linehan Board Certified program — one of fewer than 30 in the U.S. That matters even if your teen never joins the full program: every clinician works from the same evidence-based playbook for intense emotions, self-harm, and family conflict, and meets weekly as a consultation team. When a teen needs more than weekly therapy, our comprehensive Teen DBT program — individual therapy, multi-family skills group, phone coaching, and parent support — is right here, with no referral out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What parents most often ask about teen counseling in Denver.

How do I find the right therapist for my teen in Denver?
Look for three things: a clinician who works primarily with adolescents (not adults-who-also-see-teens), a structured approach with evidence behind it, and a practice that involves parents rather than leaving you in the waiting room. At FRTC, teen therapy is delivered by clinicians who specialize in adolescents, and parent involvement is built into how we work.
What's the difference between teen counseling and your Teen DBT program?
Teen counseling (individual therapy) is one-on-one work between your teen and their therapist, tailored to what they're navigating. Our Teen DBT program is a comprehensive, DBT-Linehan Board Certified track that adds a weekly multi-family skills group, phone coaching, and parent coaching. Many families start with a consultation and we recommend the right fit — some teens need the full program, others do well with weekly individual therapy.
Does my teen need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. If intense emotions, conflict, or worrying behavior are making daily life harder, that's reason enough. We describe what teens are experiencing rather than rushing to labels, and we'll talk through what your family is navigating on the consultation call.
Do you offer teen therapy in person or online?
Both. In-person sessions are at our Greenwood Village office (Denver Tech Center), and telehealth is available for teens anywhere in Colorado. Many families mix the two depending on school and activity schedules.
How are parents involved?
It depends on your teen's needs and age. At minimum, you'll get guidance on how to support the work at home. In our comprehensive DBT program, parents learn the same skills as their teen in a multi-family group — research shows this makes treatment more effective and lasting. Teens still have confidential individual sessions; we'll explain how confidentiality works for adolescents on your call.
What does teen therapy cost? Do you take insurance?
Intake appointments are $250, and individual sessions run $175–225. We accept Colorado Access (Medicaid); for commercial plans we're out-of-network and provide superbills you can submit for possible reimbursement. Full details are on our billing page, and we're happy to walk through cost on your consultation call.
What ages do you work with?
Our adolescent services are built for ages 13–17. For younger children we offer a separate Child DBT program (ages 4–12), and young adults have their own track in our adult program.
