Safety and screening for psilocybin-assisted therapy under Colorado's Natural Medicine Program
What to Expect · Safety First

Safety & Screening

Natural medicine isn't right for everyone — and the way we make it safe is by being careful about who, when, and how. Here's what that looks like.

Screening comes first A thorough screening precedes any session — it's how we confirm this is safe and appropriate for you.
Medical & med review We review your health history and current medications, coordinating with your prescriber as needed.
Not right for everyone Some histories and conditions make psilocybin inadvisable — honesty in screening protects you.
Supported throughout A licensed facilitator is present the entire session, in a state-approved setting.

Safety is the foundation, not an afterthought

Psilocybin can be a powerful experience, and powerful experiences deserve care. Everything about how we work — screening before anything else, a licensed facilitator present throughout, a controlled setting, and integration afterward — exists so the work is as safe as it is meaningful.

The most important safeguard is the honest conversation at the start. Screening isn't a hurdle; it's how we make sure this is right for you before anyone commits to a session.

What screening looks at

A thorough conversation before any session — and the reason it matters for each part.

Health & psychiatric history

We review your medical and mental-health history to understand what's safe. This isn't about gatekeeping — it's about matching the work to what your system can hold.

Current medications

Certain medications — particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and lithium — can interact with psilocybin or blunt its effects, and some require a careful taper coordinated with your prescriber. We review everything you take. Never adjust or stop a medication on your own.

Personal & family history

Psilocybin is generally not recommended for people with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar I, and some cardiac conditions warrant extra caution. Whether it's appropriate for you is a clinical decision made together during screening.

Your goals & context

We talk through why you're considering this now, what support you have around you, and how a journey would fit with any ongoing care — so the work is set up to help rather than destabilize.

Safeguards during the session

Sessions take place in a private, state-licensed healing center, never at home. A state-licensed facilitator is present the entire time — you are never left alone. You'll agree on simple signals beforehand so support is always within reach, and you'll be given time to rest afterward until you're clear to leave. Because you cannot drive after a session, a trusted person arranges your ride home.

Everything shared is held under the same confidentiality protections as any professional therapeutic relationship; your facilitator reviews the limits of confidentiality with you during preparation.

Important: This page is general education, not medical advice, and it doesn't capture every consideration. Whether natural medicine is appropriate for you is determined through screening with a licensed facilitator. Psilocybin remains federally Schedule I; Colorado's program operates under state law. Do not start, stop, or change any medication without consulting your prescriber. No outcome can be guaranteed.

Wondering if it's right for you?
