Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy in Colorado

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain mushrooms. When combined with structured therapeutic support, research from Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College London has shown it can produce rapid and lasting improvements in mood, emotional processing, and psychological flexibility — often after just one or two sessions.

Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act (Proposition 122) now allows licensed facilitators to provide psilocybin services to adults 21 and older in state-approved healing centers. These are not recreational experiences. Every session includes clinical preparation, professional facilitation, and therapeutic integration afterward.

At Front Range Treatment Center, natural medicine services are offered as part of a broader continuum of care — complementing our existing DBT and CBT programs for clients who may benefit from this approach.

The Research Behind Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy

Peer-reviewed clinical trials from leading universities show that psilocybin-assisted therapy produces significant, lasting improvements — especially for conditions that haven't responded to standard treatments.

71%

of participants with treatment-resistant depression showed clinically significant improvement after psilocybin-assisted therapy

Carhart-Harris et al., The Lancet Psychiatry, 2016
80%

reduction in anxiety and depression in patients with life-threatening cancer diagnoses — effects lasting 6+ months

Griffiths et al., Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2016
83%

of participants with alcohol use disorder significantly reduced heavy drinking days after psilocybin-assisted therapy

Bogenschutz et al., JAMA Psychiatry, 2022

These findings come from randomized controlled trials — the gold standard of clinical evidence. The research is promising and growing, though psilocybin-assisted therapy is still an emerging field. Results vary by individual.

How It Works

1 session · 6–8 hours
03

Integration

Follow-up sessions to process what emerged, make meaning from the experience, and translate insights into lasting change in your daily life. This is where the real work happens.

1+ sessions · 50 min each

Works With Your Existing Therapy

Psilocybin services are designed to complement — not replace — your current therapeutic work. Insights from the experience often surface material that deepens self-awareness, emotional processing, and motivation for change. Your FRTC therapist can help prepare for and integrate the experience as part of a seamless continuum of care.

Insurance: Natural medicine services are not currently covered by insurance. Full payment is due prior to the administration session.

Superbill: Available for preparation and integration sessions. You may submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement depending on your plan.

HSA/FSA: These funds may be used toward natural medicine services. Consult your plan administrator for details.

Safety & Screening

Your safety is the priority at every step of the process.

Licensed & Regulated

All services are provided by a state-licensed facilitator in an approved healing center, in full compliance with Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act.

Thorough Screening

A comprehensive screening ensures safety before any session. Psilocybin is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or certain other psychiatric conditions.

Medication Interactions

Certain medications — particularly SSRIs, MAOIs, and lithium — may interact with psilocybin. All medications are reviewed during screening. Never adjust medications without your prescriber's guidance.

Not Recreational

This is therapeutic support in a clinical context — no retail sales, no take-home products. The structured setting with professional facilitation is what distinguishes this from unsupervised use.

Difficult Moments Are Normal

Challenging passages during the experience are common and not necessarily harmful. Your facilitator is trained to provide grounding support. Preparation sessions equip you with tools to navigate with confidence.

Plan for Aftercare

You must arrange for someone you trust to drive you home after the administration session. Plan to rest for the remainder of that day. No driving until the following day.

Important: Natural medicine services are not appropriate for everyone. Thorough screening ensures safety, and no outcome can be guaranteed. Research is promising, but psilocybin-assisted therapy is still an emerging field. Speak with your therapist to determine whether this is a good fit for you.

“The medicine gives you the experience. Preparation and integration are what turn experience into lasting change.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about psilocybin-assisted therapy at FRTC.

About Psilocybin & Legality
What is psilocybin?
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain species of mushrooms. When ingested, it converts to psilocin in the body and interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, producing altered states of consciousness, emotional openness, and often profound personal insights. It is non-addictive and non-toxic at therapeutic doses.
Is psilocybin-assisted therapy legal in Colorado?
Yes. Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act (Proposition 122), passed in 2022, legalized regulated psilocybin services for adults 21 and older. Licensed facilitators may offer services in state-approved healing centers. Psilocybin is not available for retail sale — services must occur in regulated settings with licensed facilitation.
Is this the same as recreational mushroom use?
No. Regulated natural medicine services are therapeutic — conducted in a structured setting with a licensed facilitator, preceded by clinical preparation, and followed by integration sessions. The presence of professional support, intention-setting, and follow-up care is what makes this meaningfully different from unsupervised recreational use.
Who It's For
Who might benefit from psilocybin-assisted therapy?
Research suggests psilocybin-assisted therapy may benefit adults experiencing depression (including treatment-resistant cases), anxiety, PTSD, end-of-life distress, or substance use challenges. It may also support personal growth, grief processing, and emotional exploration for those without a formal clinical diagnosis. Eligibility is determined through the screening and intake process.
Who should NOT pursue these services?
Psilocybin services are not appropriate for everyone. They are generally not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or certain other psychiatric conditions. A thorough screening is conducted before any session to ensure safety. Certain medications may also need to be reviewed or discussed with your prescriber.
Do I need a clinical diagnosis to participate?
No. Some clients pursue natural medicine services for personal growth, grief processing, or existential exploration — not only for clinical symptom relief. Whether services are appropriate for you is determined through the screening and intake process with your facilitator.
The Psilocybin Journey
What happens during the administration session?
You ingest psilocybin in a comfortable, private, state-licensed healing center — such as Neuro Alchemy — as required by Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act. Your facilitator provides non-directive support throughout the experience. Eye shades and music are commonly used to support an inward journey. You are never left alone. The experience typically lasts 4–6 hours, after which you rest before being cleared to leave with a trusted person.
How many sessions does the full process involve?
Most participants complete 1–3 preparation sessions, one administration session, and 1–2 integration sessions. Your facilitator will work with you to determine the right number based on your goals, history, and experience. Additional preparation or integration sessions are available at $175 each.
Will my therapist be in the room during the session?
Not necessarily. Under Colorado's current regulatory model, facilitation during the administration session is provided by a licensed natural medicine facilitator — which may or may not be your existing therapist, depending on their licensure. Your therapist can still play an important role in preparation beforehand and integration afterward, even if they are not the facilitator.
Can I drive myself home afterward?
No. You must arrange for a trusted person to transport you home following the administration session. Plan to rest for the remainder of that day and avoid driving until the following day.
Integration & Ongoing Therapy
How does this connect with my existing therapy at FRTC?
Psilocybin services are designed to work alongside your current therapy — not replace it. Insights from the experience often surface material that deepens therapeutic work: emotional breakthroughs, new perspectives, or heightened motivation for change. Your FRTC therapist can help you prepare beforehand and integrate afterward, creating a seamless continuum of care.
What is "integration" and why does it matter?
Integration is the process of making meaning from your experience and translating insights into lasting behavioral and emotional change. Without integration, the benefits of a psilocybin session often fade. It typically involves reflection, journaling, and follow-up sessions with your therapist or facilitator. Additional integration beyond the included session is strongly recommended.
Practical Details
Can psilocybin interact with my medications?
Yes. Certain medications — particularly SSRIs, MAOIs, and lithium — may interact with psilocybin. All current medications are reviewed during the screening process. Never adjust or discontinue any medication without first consulting your prescribing provider.
How much does it cost?
The complete natural medicine service package is $2,500, which includes 2 preparation sessions, the administration session (6–8 hours), 1 integration session, and all psilocybin product and facility costs. Additional preparation or integration sessions are $175 each. Services are not covered by insurance, though superbills are available for potential out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA funds may also be used.
How do I get started?
Start by talking with your therapist. They can help determine whether natural medicine services may be a good fit for your situation, answer questions specific to your history and goals, and connect you with the appropriate next steps for screening and intake.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. All natural medicine services are subject to standard confidentiality protections. Your facilitator will review the limits of confidentiality with you during preparation, as they would in any professional therapeutic relationship.
