How to Prepare for Your Journey

A good journey begins well before the session day. Preparation is part of the work — and it's where a lot of the safety and the depth come from.

It starts in prep A dedicated preparation session comes before any journey — this is where readiness is built.
Set intentions We work out the why you're bringing, not a script for what should happen.
Mind & body Simple steps in the days before — rest, substances, and a medication review.
Handle logistics A ride home, a clear calendar, and integration already on the books.

Why preparation matters

The experience itself is only one part of a journey. What comes before shapes how safe you feel, how you meet what arises, and how much you carry forward. Preparation isn't paperwork — it's how we build the trust and readiness that let you genuinely let go on the day.

Here's how we prepare together, and what you can do on your own in the run-up.

Four ways we get you ready

Some of this we do together in session; some is yours to tend in the days before.

The preparation session

Every journey is preceded by at least one preparation session with your facilitator. You'll build trust, talk through what to expect, walk through the setting, and agree on how you'll be supported during the session. It's also where questions and nerves get room to settle.

Setting your intentions

Intentions aren't goals to achieve or a script for the experience — they're the why you carry in. Something as simple as "I want to understand this grief" or "I want to feel less at war with myself." We'll shape yours together, then hold them lightly and let the experience lead.

Preparing mind and body

In the days before, aim for steady sleep, ease off alcohol and other substances, and eat lightly the morning of. Some medications — particularly SSRIs, MAOIs, and lithium — need review well in advance. Never adjust or stop a medication without your prescriber; we coordinate this during screening and prep.

Practical logistics

Arrange a trusted person to drive you home — you won't be able to drive yourself. Clear your calendar for the whole day and ideally the evening. Bring anything that helps you feel at ease. And schedule your integration session before the journey, so the landing is already in place.

The one thing to bring: openness

If there's a single stance that helps, it's this: trust, let go, and stay open. You don't have to make anything happen or steer the experience. The preparation, the setting, the music, and your facilitator are all there to hold the container — your job is simply to allow it.

Whatever comes — ease or difficulty, images or emotion or stillness — the most useful response is curiosity rather than resistance. That's a lot easier said than done, which is exactly why we practice it in preparation rather than leaving it for the day.
