Self-Soothe (5 senses)

Self-Soothe is comforting yourself on purpose through your five senses to get through a difficult moment without making it worse.

The steps

  1. Pick the sense that calls most right now: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.
  2. Find one comforting thing in that channel: a soft blanket, a warm drink, a song.
  3. Use it slowly, on purpose. Pay attention to the comfort itself.
  4. Stay with it longer than feels needed. The body needs full doses.

When it helps

When you need to be soothed, not solved.

An example

After a hard day, someone makes a cup of tea, wraps up in a heavy blanket, and listens to one album start to finish, paying attention to the warmth of the mug and the weight of the blanket rather than replaying the day.

Where people get stuck

  • Feeling you don't deserve it. Self-soothing isn't a reward; it's a way through the moment.
  • Rushing it. It works when you pay attention to the sensation, not when you half-notice it while scrolling.
  • Picking something that soothes now and hurts later, like eating or spending in excess.

When not to use it

When soothing turns into avoiding something that needs doing, or when the soothing behavior becomes its own problem.
