The DBT Toolkit for clinicians
Free tools you can hand to clients for practice between sessions. Clients don't need an account, and nothing they type is stored or sent anywhere.
Ways to use it
- Assign a skill page as homework. Each skill page leads with the steps, then an example, common sticking points and when to use something else. Send the link after teaching the skill in session.
- Install the Skills Finder on the client's phone in session. The Skills Finder installs like an app and works offline, so it's there in the moment the client needs it. Walk through it together once.
- Prepare for a hard conversation. The DEAR MAN, GIVE and FAST builder has clients rank what matters most and builds a script they can rehearse with you or bring to session.
- Work through an emotion that doesn't fit the facts. The Check the Facts and Opposite Action worksheet turns check the facts and opposite action into a written plan.
- Set up a diary card. Open the diary card, choose the urges, actions and emotions under "Change what you track", then use "Copy setup link" and send it to your client. The setup travels in the link itself, so nothing is stored on a server. The week prints as a standard black-and-white card, and clients can back their card up to a file.
- Start a chain analysis between sessions. The chain analysis worksheet walks through vulnerabilities, the prompting event, each link and a replacement skill, then repair. Clients can bring the printed chain to session to finish it with you.
- Track PLEASE. The PLEASE planner is a one-minute daily check with one target for tomorrow. Like the diary card and the Finder, it installs as part of the same offline app.
- Give parents words to use. The validation builder for parents turns the six levels of validation into a script, with phrases to avoid. Useful alongside Walking the Middle Path.
- Share the vocabulary. The DBT glossary helps clients and family members learn the terms used in sessions and skills group.
Privacy
Everything runs in the client's browser. There are no accounts, no form submissions and no stored responses. Worksheets can be copied or printed and brought to session. Skill pages print cleanly from the browser.
