Build Mastery
Build Mastery is doing at least one thing a day that is challenging but possible, to build a sense of competence and control.
The steps
- Pick one thing today that uses a real skill of yours. Not chores — something that needs you.
- Do it well. Take the time it deserves.
- Notice what happens in your body when you finish: shoulders, breathing, energy.
- That's mastery. Bank it. You can return to it tomorrow.
When it helps
When you need to remind yourself you're capable.
An example
Depression has made everything feel hard, so someone picks one thing a day that's a small stretch: today, cooking a simple meal from scratch. Finishing it brings a sense of "I can do things," and tomorrow they try something slightly harder.
Where people get stuck
- Choosing something too hard. Plan for success; a little difficult is enough.
- Discounting it afterward. Notice the accomplishment instead of saying "that was nothing."
- Doing it once. Mastery builds when you raise the difficulty gradually over time.
When not to use it
When it turns into perfectionism or overworking. The point is a sense of competence, not proving your worth.
