Mindfulness · DBT skill
One-Mindfully
One-Mindfully is doing one thing at a time with your full attention, and bringing your mind back each time it wanders.
The steps
- Pick the one thing that matters most right now. Just one.
- Close everything else. Phone face-down, tabs closed, body still.
- Do that one thing. When you finish, then pick the next.
- If your mind wants to multitask, treat the urge like noise. Stay on the one.
When it helps
When you're scattered, half-present, doing five things badly.
An example
Someone eats lunch at their desk while answering email and can't remember tasting anything. They try one lunch away from the screen, noticing each bite, and go back to their inbox afterward feeling less frazzled.
Where people get stuck
- Expecting your mind not to wander. It will; the skill is coming back.
- Doing one thing while worrying about the next. Let the next thing wait its turn.
- Saving it for special moments. It works best on ordinary tasks.
When not to use it
When you're dwelling on something painful, putting all your attention on it can make it bigger. Turn your full attention to what you're doing instead.
