Denver holds a unique position in the psychedelic therapy landscape. In 2019, it became the first U.S. city to decriminalize psilocybin. In 2022, Colorado became the second state (after Oregon) to legalize regulated psilocybin therapy. This combination of early adoption and progressive policy has created one of the most vibrant psychedelic communities in the country.

How Denver Got Here

Denver’s psychedelic journey began with Initiative 301 in May 2019 — a citywide ballot measure that made the enforcement of laws against psilocybin possession the lowest priority for Denver police. The measure passed by a narrow margin and sent a signal that reverberated nationally.

The success of I-301 created momentum for the statewide Proposition 122 campaign, which passed in November 2022 with the support of the Natural Medicine Colorado coalition. While I-301 was limited to decriminalization within Denver city limits, Prop 122 created a comprehensive statewide regulatory framework — the Natural Medicine Health Act — that includes licensed healing centers, trained facilitators, and regulated supply chains.

Community Organizations

The Denver metro area is home to a growing ecosystem of organizations supporting the psychedelic community.

Denver Psychedelic Society hosts regular events including speaker series, integration circles, film screenings, and community gatherings. It’s one of the best entry points for people new to the psychedelic space who want to learn, connect, and engage with like-minded individuals.

Natural Medicine Colorado — the coalition that led the Prop 122 campaign — continues to focus on equitable implementation, public education, and community engagement. They track regulatory developments, advocate for access, and provide resources for understanding the evolving legal landscape.

Colorado Psychedelic Society operates at the statewide level, connecting researchers, clinicians, facilitators, and community members through events, advocacy, and education.

Integration Circles

Integration circles are one of the most valuable community resources in the Denver area. These are structured group settings where people who’ve had psychedelic experiences come together to share, process, and support each other’s integration journeys.

Integration circles are not therapy groups — they’re peer support communities. A typical circle might be facilitated by someone with integration training, follow a structured format (check-in, sharing rounds, theme discussion), maintain confidentiality agreements, and be open to people with diverse psychedelic experiences.

Multiple organizations in Denver host regular circles, some in-person and some virtual. They’re an excellent complement to individual facilitator and therapist support.

Educational Events

Denver regularly hosts educational events ranging from academic lectures and research presentations to panel discussions on policy, ethics, and cultural considerations. The University of Colorado system, Denver-area research institutions, and community organizations all contribute to a calendar of events that keeps the local community informed and engaged.

Topics range from the latest clinical trial data to practical discussions about choosing a facilitator, safety considerations, and the ethics of psychedelic therapy.

Practitioner Networks

As the licensed healing center ecosystem grows, Denver’s practitioner community is becoming more organized. Networks of facilitators, integration therapists, and complementary practitioners (bodyworkers, meditation teachers, creative arts therapists) are forming — creating the kind of collaborative care infrastructure that supports high-quality therapeutic outcomes.

For people seeking psilocybin therapy, this means increasingly robust options for building a comprehensive support team rather than relying on a single provider. If you live in or near the city itself, our Denver service area page outlines how we work with clients across the metro.

Getting Involved

Whether you’re considering psilocybin therapy, simply curious about psychedelic science, or interested in contributing to the community, Denver offers multiple entry points. Attend a public educational event or speaker series. Join an integration circle (even if you haven’t had a psychedelic experience). Follow local organizations for regulatory updates and community opportunities. Explore the research to ground your understanding in evidence.

The Denver psychedelic community is welcoming, informed, and committed to responsible practice. It’s a good place to start.
