What Makes a DBT Treatment Center?
Most clinics that advertise "DBT" only deliver part of the model. Here's how a real comprehensive DBT program differs.
1. All four modes
A true DBT program runs on four legs: individual therapy, a weekly skills group, phone coaching between sessions, and a therapist consultation team. Drop any one, and it's no longer comprehensive DBT.
2. Board certification, not self-claim
The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification reviews programs against the original research protocol. Very few programs nationally meet the bar. FRTC is one of them.
3. Clinicians who specialize
In a real DBT center, clinicians carry a substantial DBT caseload — not one or two clients as a side interest. That depth is how they stay sharp on the protocol and on the skills themselves.
4. Structure and measurement
DBT is session-structured and data-driven. Diary cards, behavior tracking, and target hierarchies are part of the work. If therapy is open-ended chat, that's a different (and often useful) thing — but it isn't DBT.
