ICD To Add Video Game Addiction to List of Disorders

The new edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is set to be released this year. It will contain many changes, including the addition of the condition "gaming disorder.” The draft disorder includes the following symptoms:

  • impaired control over gaming (frequency, intensity, duration)
  • increased priority given to gaming
  • continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences

The DSM-V, used by most mental health professionals, does not include video game addiction. It includes it has a condition for further study, suggesting it may be included in the future.
