Depression and Compulsive Buying

Compulsive buying and shopping can result from a variety of motivations, including depression, mania, substance use, OCD, materialism, or impulsivity. Women are more likely than men to respond to depression by compulsive buying. See Relationship between compulsive buying and depressive symptoms among males and females. Compulsive buying is not an effective way to treat depression, as any relief is temporary and tends to encourage a cycle of more buying until that too because a major problem.
