The Benefit of a Diagnosis

Many people tend to thing of a receiving a mental health diagnosis as a negative. This is especially true when the diagnosis carries a stigma, like borderline personality disorder (BPD). In reality, the person receiving the diagnosis has often been struggling for a long time. A diagnosis can provide relief and clarity. It is the first step on the road to effective treatment.

A solid diagnosis allows for greater consistency of care over time and with different providers. It can also provide for relief for persons who have struggled for years to explain their symptoms, often given numerous and conflicting diagnoses. When a diagnosis seems to "fit," it offers hope:

"many people have this diagnosis"

"there is research on this diagnosis"

"my therapist has successfully treated this diagnosis"
