A recent study from John Hopkins examined a link between nitrates and mania. Nitrates are found in bacon, hotdogs, jerky, salami and other cured meats. The study found that persons who had been hospitalized for mania were three times more likely than a control sample to have consumed such foods.

According to the author, “Future work on this association could lead to dietary interventions to help reduce the risk of manic episodes in those who have bipolar disorder.”

In another study by the same researchers, they also discovered a link between nitrate consumption and hyperactivity in mice.
